Debby Horsman grabs President’s Cup as 134 graduate from SBSA

Debby Horsman has excelled out of 134 young graduates who have completed their studies from the Seychelles Business Studies Academy (SBSA).

Miss Horsman was presented with the President’s Cup by Designated Minister Macsuzy Mondon during the school’s graduation ceremony held yesterday afternoon in the University of Seychelles (UniSey) auditorium at Anse Royale.

She also received a laptop from President Danny Faure and other prizes including a scholarship from the Agency for National Human Resource Development (ANHRD) for further studies at university level.

Michaella Belle received the outstanding performer in diploma in office management and administration, while Stephanie Agathine received the outstanding performer in diploma in business studies and accounting.

Kate Louis was awarded for best effort in diploma in business studies and accounting and Kelly Luc was the recipient of this same award in diploma in office management and administration.

Karen Maria received the AAT Shield; Curtis Basset received the City & Guilds Shield, while Amanda Bradburn was awarded the Seychelles National Youth Council (SNYC) most improved student award.

The governing board award went to Amanda Hortere and in her vote of thanks she said time flew by very fast.

“It feels like it was only yesterday that we began our first year at SBSA. Everything was new to us back then, we felt so proud to have been accepted at this professional centre. We were all confident that we would do great things and come out as huge successes at the academy. The director did call us the babies of the academy on the first day but we saw ourselves as prospective graduates at the end of the three years and today we can say that we achieved that dream,” she said.

There was one recipient of certificate in business studies and accounting, 58 in each diploma in business studies and accounting and diploma in office management and administration, while six received Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) level 2 certificate in accounting, nine received AAT level 3 diploma in accounting and two AAT level 4 diploma in accounting.

Addressing the graduates, the SBSA director Josianne Bristol said: “Make good use of the range of opportunities which our country places at your disposal to further develop your capacity for productive employment or self-employment.”

The director said SBSA is in the process of implementing their Student Data Management System which will give them better control of all administrative processes and student information.

The academy is also currently developing its strategic plan and website and will soon embark on a rigorous evaluation by the Seychelles Qualifications Authority (SQA) to seek full accreditation status.

“2016 was a challenging but fruitful year for the academy and it is our hope that 2017 will yield better outcomes,” she said.

Throughout the year 2016 SBSA fully implemented its Mentorship Programme to provide one-to-one support to underperforming students.

“Through this we have been able to ensure that all students managed to get the required grades for promotion and for graduation,” she said.

She extended her gratitude to the SBSA lecturers, partners, sponsors, and families of the graduates.

Miss Horsman said the three years at SBSA was very tough but she managed to pull through from the help of her lecturers.

She said she was not expecting to receive this award.

“I participated in many activities although at times it got hard to balance it with my studies but I managed and now that I have won this scholarship I will definitely be going for further studies,” she said.
